Finally after a 2 week drought, tomorrow's Sunday papers should include coupons once again.

Go to the "Cuties" facebook page, and like them, and you can print off a 75cts off coupon.  This is a great way to get kids to eat their fruits, because they get a kick out of the fact that they are so small.

Everything I Need to Buy is at...: Friday, December 31st, 2011

You may have read the book "Everything I Needed to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten", or at least heard of it.

Well today, as I was shopping for new reading glasses (a concession to age that I've made just this year :), it occurred to me, that everything I need to buy is at Dollar Tree.  This is of course a slight exaggeration, but only slight. 
There are certain things that I know not to spend much money on, because I know I will lose them in no time.  Sunglasses, lip balm, and now I can add reading glasses to this list.  As recently as a month ago, I had 5 pairs, I broke one pair, and can't locate 3 pair, so now I'm down to one.  I would like to have a pair at each of my work stations, a pair by my nightstand, a pair in the bathroom (I mean, admit it, everybody reads in the bathroom.  They have whole novels written just for the bathroom.), and a pair in the living room.
I was tempted to buy two pair at a local drug store, that had buy 1/get 1 free.  Even at that each pair were going to be about $12 each.  Then it dawned on me to look at Dollar Tree.  I got a very cute purple pair for only $1.

Cheap Last Minute Wrapping: December 24th, 2011

Merry Christmas Eve,

Do you not think that gift bags were the greatest thing ever invented?  I mean honestly, if the average American had to vote for the greatest invention/discovery of all time----are you going to vote for Einstein's Theory of Relativity (ooh I hope that's the right theory, science was never my strongest subject), or are you going to vote for the gift bag?

I have raved about Dollar Tree many times on my blog.  If Dollar Tree was a franchise, believe me, I would own one.  I had 2 gifts left to wrap, I bought 2 of the cutest Christmas gift bags that I have seen anywhere at Dollar Tree last night.

When it comes to greeting cards, decorative party items, gift wrap and balloons, you can't beat Dollar Tree!

Great Flick at the Cheap Show: Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Tonight I went and saw "Dolphin Tale" at the Palace.  It was a really good movie.
The rating was PG, but there was no violent language or any sexual references, so I'm not for sure why it would be rated PG.  The friend I went with, thought it might have had to do with the showing of the soldiers with prosthetic limbs.  I really don't think that children would be disturbed by that, especially the way in which the movie handled it.
The movie comes out in DVD on the 20th, so it would make a great gift----but it would also make a great outing to take your children to over the holidays.  And it's CHEAP :)

Sometimes you just step into a good thing.

I was at Walgreens picking up a prescription.  Their Revlon nail polish was on sale with a $1 in store coupon and a $3 Register Reward, which made it free.  Normally those types of items are a limit of one, but at this location the clerk said they had gotten double what they intended, so they weren't limiting.

Savings in the Most Unusual Places: Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Many of us have stumbled upon a savings in the most of unusual places.

One great place to find really inexpensive unique items is the gift shop in both the Library Center and in the Library Station.
I never go to the library that I don't stop in.  The other day I found the cutest snowmen ornaments for only 75cts each.  Christmas bags were $1.50 or less, and they were big.
The other great thing about shopping in the library gift shop is that you know the profits from your purchase are going for a good cause.

Lots of great coupons this Sunday!  Remember buy as many papers as the coupons you will use will pay for.  It's a boost for our economy.  If everyone bought the number of papers that they could pay for with just the coupons that they use---the impact would be great.  For most people even if you use less than 5 of the coupons in each paper , you've made money.

Surprising Savings Source: Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

Saving money can be done in many ways, besides coupons, and savings suggestions can come from many places.

Today I was watching "Access Hollywood"  (I'm not proud of it, but I am admitting it.)  Snooki was being interviewed regarding her new book, which includes beauty tips.  One money saving tip that she promotes is making a facial mask out of water and kitty litter.  In the interview she made it very plain, that the kitty litter should be clean (DUH!)  When the reporter said, "That sounds gross."  Snooki agreed, but said it gave you beautiful skin.

I'm definitely wouldn't try this without getting exact directions from either Snooki's new book (sorry, you won't be able to borrow it from me, it's not a title that I am planning to purchase), or from an internet site, but if you try this, please let me know at booklady500@aol.com

Pet Care Products FREE: Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Sorry the post is so late tonight, but I was caught up in watching "Twilight" on TV.  I've got to admit it---I'm one of those people (I forget what they call them)----but believe me I never expected to be.
When "Twilight" first came out, several of my colleagues in their late 20's, early 30's, were talking about what great books these were.  My thought was, "What in the world about teen-age vampires could possibly interest me?"  I am an educated, 50 yr. old woman.
Then a 70 yr. old co-worker talked about how great the writer had created sensual, not sexual love scenes.  I was surprised that this woman had read the books, she was a voracious, but very persnickety reader, but still not enough to get me to pick one up.  Normally I am not a fiction reader.
But the "straw that broke the camel's back" so to speak was another co-worker who was 75 ,and said her 13 yr. old grandson had recommended the series to her and she loved it.  Okay--any writer who can write a book that interests 13-75 yr. olds, I've got to read.  And I did, and I was hooked.  I read all 4 in a matter of 2 weeks.

I told my "significant other", that was exactly what I wanted.  Someone who loved me so much, that he stayed up all night just to watch me sleep.  He replied, "How do you know I don't?".  I said, "Well for one thing you snore like a pig, so obviously you are not watching me with the adoration that I deserve."  :)

Now to the money saver tip for the day:  Visit the Facebook page of AKC Gold Pet Products.  You can print out a rebate form for up to $12.99.  Even if you don't have a pet, this would be a great donation to one of our local pet shelters.  Non-profit shelters are always in need of donations, and if you could make one that wouldn't cost you much more then a stamp, what a great deal!  It can be really easy to be generous, if you just take a few minutes of your time.

Trying New Things: Saturday, November 12th

Sometimes I will read about a great deal/shop/website etc., and I will always be afraid to try it.  For most of us, trying something new, dealing with people and situations---which we haven't dealt with before, ordering from a website we aren't familiar with is very un-nerving.  Unfortunately, our growing advances in media has made us so distrustful of each other, it's very sad.  Though I completely understand, I'm the same way.  No one wants to be taken advantage of.  That's why I'm asking for your input, when it comes to great things to add to my saver's blog.  If you've had a great experience with a store or site, please email me at booklady500@aol.com

One experience it took me a long time to try, but I have had good luck with it, is the website "Plasticjungle.com"
This is a site that sells discounted gift cards.  I have purchased several cards from the site, and have had no problems.  With the holidays coming up, you may want to try out the site too.

There are other sites that offer this type of service.  I will list these, but I can't vouch for any---except to say that the list came from a reputable source.  Companies that provide discounted gift cards are Card Pool;  Gift Card Castle;  Gift Cards.com;  Gift Card Rescue.
If anyone has had good or bad experiences with the above, please let me know, so that I can pass the word along.

It just takes a little :) Saturday, November 5th

Today is my late mother's birthday.  She died 28 years ago.  Without a doubt, it was the great tragedy of my life.  The thing I (and my brother) have regretted the most, is the fact that she never got to see our children.  Between the 2 of us, we have 4.

I talked with my sister-in-law today, and she was having a garage sale to help her oldest pay for a trip to Washington D.C.  The cost of the trip is over $1000, and my niece is only a few hundred away from her goal.  I was very impressed.

This made me think of teaching your children to use coupons.  Many women/men think they are simply too busy to find and use coupons.  Teach your children, or let them learn on their own----lots of websites available, and then let them keep the money that is saved, or offer to halve the savings with them.
This activity teaches children so many great things---math skills, research skills, and the satisfaction of earning something they really wanted.  Plus it is a skill that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

HyVee/Disney World: October 31st, 2011

Okay-I was in HyVee twice this weekend.  The crowd was unbelievable.  The fruit looked wonderful, but sadly I went straight to the bakery aisle.  I can vouch that the cookies and cakes were great!

The rest of our grocery stores run on a Wed. - Tues. cycle.  I'm not for sure if this is how HyVee runs their sale circulars or not, but I will find out and let you know.

Even if you don't live close, you do have to go at least once---it was like Disney World.  You didn't know where to go first.

But all good shoppers know, looks are only skin deep---the real test is in the pocket book.

Welch's Coupons: Saturday, October 29th

I used to love grape jelly and grape juice.  I could drink a gallon.  When I was pregnant with my daughter 26 years ago, I became deathly ill after drinking grape juice, and have not had a glass since.  Fortunately, I haven't held it against her, and I still love grape jelly.

The best way to use my site, along with the majors: Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Every Sunday I print the coupons that are in the Springfield News Leader and the Kansas City Star. 
The reason I started doing this was because when I went to the national coupon sites, and it listed the coupons that could be matched with sale items, I was always so disappointed when our inserts hadn't had those coupons that particular week.

Grocery ads come out on Wed.   Visit couponmom.com, to find the matchups for Dillons and HyVee.  The format is pretty easy to understand.  Pull up my site in another window, scroll to the date that the coupon was supposed to be in the paper, and you can find out quickly whether to start searching through one of your inserts to clip.

This is the way that I do it.  I jot down the items which I want to purchase that week from the couponmom.com site.  I also list the date of the paper the coupon was supposed to be in, and what insert was supposed to have it.  I work on only one date at a time----for example, I look up all the items that were supposed to be in the paper on 9/11----then I will go to the next date 9/18, etc.  That keeps you from wasting time scrolling up and down through posts.  Reading the post to see if the coupon was contained in our local insert is a lot easier then rifling through endless inserts looking for coupons that might not even be there in the first place.

Try this.  I promise it makes the coupon thing a lot easier.

Yes to Pain/No to Savings:) Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011

I want to apologize for no post yesterday, and for just a short one today. As many of you know, I've had some minor surgery in the last couple of weeks, and the discomfort level has been an up and down thing.  Later if I can get to a lower pain level, I will match up coupons for HyVee and Dillons this week.


As I've posted many times you can't take it with you, so save on the things that don't matter, and spend on experiences that give you joy.

One of the great joys of my life (which is why I weigh 210 lbs) is dining with friends.  A night or two ago I met my friends Jane and Brenda at a local place down town called "The Grad School".  It is located next door to Hoover Music.  Fun atmosphere, good prices, nice service.  I only had fries, because I wasn't all that hungry, but they were delicious.  My friends had a portabello mushroom burger and a turkey burger, and they were pleased also.

So remember, don't save/rebate/etc. so that you can eat canned vegetables for the next 10 years, if you lose your job, or if the economy collapses, or if aliens invade.  Be reasonable---save on the items that are easy to save on for you (everyone has those)--spend to make your life and the lives of others more enjoyable.

Hy Vee/ WM Best of both Worlds; Monday, Oct. 24, 2011

A friend of mine today was talking about her shopping trip to HyVee, and all the really cool merchandise they had.  They said that for their shopping the HyVee sale prices were great, but the staples that purchased were still cheaper at Wal-Mart. 
This is where the greatness of the price match comes in.  Take your ads from other stores to Wal-Mart, and they will price match.  Then you can still pick up your regular staples at the great Wal-Mart low prices.  It's really easy, the clerks are used to doing it, so it's not some long drawn out deal, like in the past.

I'm nuts about donuts! Saturday, October 22

Apologies for no post yesterday.  Previous leg surgery has bothered me a little more than I expected, and I was asleep by 7.  Now you know why this blog isn't about the night life of Springfield :)

I will do better I promise.

Today's deal is at Krispy Kreme.  I bought a book for 20 free glazed donuts for $5.  It's their Halloween special.  You do not have to make a purchase to redeem a coupon (but I would like to say that Krispy Kreme
has the best large cokes in town because they are in a styrofoam cup), and the coupons never expire.

Odd Places for Information :) Saturday, October 15th, 2011

You can find information on how to save money in the oddest places.  I hate to admit the source of my money information saving tips today, but I'm going to "bite the bullet" and tell you anyway.  Today's tips come from the AARP bulletin.  Yes, I am a card carrying member of the AARP :)  I know my friends are shocked, due to the fact that I don't look a day over 29 :) , but it's true.

Tip #1 PUT DOWN THE COOKIE :)  (This was the tip I hated the most :)  AARP contends that healthcare costs are at the heart of our nation's fiscal problems, so keeping yourself healthy is not only beneficial to you, but to the entire nation.

Tip #2 PAY YOUR DEBTS--For me, this wasn't too hard to swallow.  I do that anyway.  I not only pay my own debts, but some of the debts of other people too.  (You know who you are :)---but to give the rest of the world a hint, I gave birth to them :)

Tip #3 WALK, BIKE, SWIM--This goes back to keeping ourselves healthy, but also on reducing costs for fuel, and the maintenance of our environment.

Tip #4 PLAN TO WORK LONGER--How I feel about this tip, probably depends on the day you ask me.  If you ask me after a professional development program, where I am assured, that the new program introduced, will not add to my work load, but will be one that I can simply incorporate into what I am already doing----I will tell you that not only am I not sure that I can work an extra year or two, I'm not for sure if I can work an extra minute or two :)
If you ask me on a day where one of my students has said, "You know, Miss Taylor, when you wear your hair down, you look like a movie star."  (This is a true story by the way.  God would strike me dead immediately if I told a "whopper" this big :)  Well on one of those days, I would tell you that I could probably work another 10 to 20 years longer.

I, personally, found tip #5, so distasteful at the present time, that I couldn't even bear to list it.  If you are interested in reading it, pick up the Oct. 11th issue of the AARP bulletin.

As Good As it Gets at JCP: Thursday, Oct.13th, 2011

Friday and Saturday, JCPenneys is having their $10 off of a $25 purchase.  The $25 purchase can be made up of regular, sale, or clearance priced items.  The trick is to get as close to the $25 total as you can.

Christmas is approaching rapidly, and this is a great time to pick up those stocking stuffers.  I noticed shirts and sunglasses on the second floor mens dept. for only $2.97.  Cute bracelets and earrings in the fashion jewelry dept. for $2.97, and adorable clearance panties in the lingerie dept.  The holiday season is so much more pleasant if you don't leave all of these last minute items until the last minute. (Get the pun :)  I know, I should go on the road.

Discouraged and Deals: Tuesday, Oct. 11th, 2011

Today I found a $2 coupon that I had meant to use, and let it expire instead.  This happens, it happens to experienced and inexperienced couponers.  The main thing is don't think, "Oh I can't ever remember these darn things.  I am so aggravated, I'm just going to quit."  Believe me. by using coupons, I have saved that $2, a hundred times over.  So while, I think "Dang"---I know just to keep a better eye on things next time.

Coupon Listings and Disappearing Post: Sunday, October 9th, 2011
