Woeful Wednesday: August 31

I learned some very sad news today.  McDonald's has raised the price of my favorite treat from 49cts. to 74cts.  For an ice cream addict such as myself, this is a tragedy :)

I guess that just means I'll have to be even more diligent about saving money with coupons, so that I can still finance my habit :)

So here are this week's Dillons match ups.  I have only listed items that have a coupon, and that are more than 50% off.  They are having a $4 off 4 Procter and Gamble products.  I will put a * by prices that reflect this 4 off 4 deal.
Gillette Body Wash-$2 coupon from the Proctor and Gamble insert of 7/31.  This coupon was in both the Star and the News Leader.  *qualifies for 4 off 4--this makes this item FREE.
Oral B Advantage Toothbrush--75 ct. coupon from the P & G insert of 7/31.  *4 off 4--cost is 99cts--75% off

Stacking Savings, August 30th

One thing that every "good" couponer does is "stack" coupons.  This means using a store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon.

I find that Target and Walgreens are the best stores to coupon stack.  Walgreens has a monthly coupon book that you can pick up at stands that are right by the weekly ads.  Target has their coupons on their website, so they are a little more difficult in the fact that they have to be printed.

Today's great "stackable" deal is:  visit London Rimmel Products on Facebook.  Like them and you can print off a coupon for $2.  Use that with the Target coupon, and the eyeshadow is practically free.  You do have to hurry though, because these high value printable coupons, have a limited number of prints, so they go fast.

Have a Tightwad Tuesday :)

M&M Monday :) August 29th

Walgreens is having a super deal on my favorite candy, M&M's.  Buy 4 bags for $10, get a $5 Register Reward.  This makes each bag only $1.25.  Use the $1off 2 coupon from this Sunday's KC Star, and you are only paying $1 a bag.  If you have 2 coupons from the Star (meaning you bought 2 copies) and you are only paying 75cts.  These are the 11 or 12 oz. bags.  Life is GOOD :)

When I come across a really great deal, like the one above---I send out an email to let everyone know.  If you know someone who would like to be included on that notification list, have them email me at booklady500@aol.com

Have a Sweet Monday,
Cindy

We Can All Use a Hand: Thursday, August 25th

As times get tough, we see more and more people at stoplights and corners with a "work for food" sign.  Some I'm sure are panhandlers, but how do you know?  I'm trying to err on the side of good intentions.  I would never give money.  From working in areas of high poverty, I know that money often goes to cigarettes, alcohol, etc.  But the other day, I had an inspiration.

I told everyone a few weeks ago, how I'd gotten several canisters of Pringles from Walgreens for less than $1.  I had some in my back seat, and the last 2 men I've seen at corners---I've stuck a can of Pringles out the window.  I'm sure they wished it was a $10 bill :), but both were very appreciative.

Think what a great world it would be, if we all just gave each other a can of Pringles:)

There are 3 great coupons at krazycouponlady.com
One for Staples, one for Shoe Carnival, and one for New York and Co.
These should come in handy for back to school shopping, and updating your fall wardrobe.  Yes, I can almost feel fall in the air.  Such a relief from the horrible summer we had.

Here's wishing you a can of Pringles :)

DAV BARGAINS

My friend Sheryl went to the DAV store, and purchased 30 blouses for $6.  She was so excited because they were name brands in great condition.  If there is one thing that Sheryl knows, it's clothes.  She and I worked together for many years in a retail setting.

Sheryl went to the DAV store on Glenstone.  She purchased a slew of other items, including toys for her adorable grandson, and the whole bill only came to $14.

There are hundreds of ways to save, and I know I haven't thought of all of them.  Please email me at booklady500@aol.com, with any tips, so that I can share them with everyone.

Thanks Cindy

Topped 1000 Yea!: Saturday, August 20th

My blog topped 1000 views today.  1023 to be exact :)

One of the questions that has been asked by readers is, "How many papers should I buy?"  My advice would be buy at least 2, and here is why?

Tomorrow one of the hot deals at Walgreens is Crest 3D toothpaste.  If you buy 2, you get a $3 Register Reward.  If you use 2 coupons from the Procter and Gamble insert on 7/31, the price will be only 25 cents a tube.  Now that's a HOT deal :)

If everyone bought 2 Sunday papers, and even if they only got their purchase price back, just think what that could do.  How many jobs would the paper have to add, if their Sunday circulation doubled?  In reality, you will do better than just re-cooping your purchase price, but even if that's all you did----if enough of us did it---we would be giving someone a job.

Thanks for reading.  I really appreciate it.

I LV DollarTree: Friday, August 19th

I blogged about taking my son to DollarTree several days ago.  His comment was, "This Dollar Store is awesome."  High praise from a man of few words.

Today my friend Tamra was showing me pictures of her children.  I commented on what a cute headband her daughter had on.  She grinned and said, "DollarTree".  Tamra said the headbands were only $1, using one a flower from one of their silk arrangements, and you have less than $2 in an adorable accessory.

These tough economic times can wear us down---my advice, wear a flower in your hair to brighten your smile
.
Hope you have a wild weekend of savings,
Cindy

Karen's Thrifty Tips: Thursday, August 18th

I blogged about the tip that my friend Karen gave me, concerning the sale at Red Racks Thrift Store, last Sat.  Karen has gotten some fantastic deals there, a Liz Claiborne skirt, running shoes, just tons of great stuff, and all less than $2.
Karen says the best thing to do is go a couple of days early and scout out what you want, so that when you get there, in the midst of battle :)---you have a plan.  That way the crowd and chaos won't confuse and slow you down.  And Karen didn't say this, but I could tell from the note that she wrote me, she had made friends with the sales clerks, and they were glad to let her in on when the best prices were to be had.  This doesn't surprise me because Karen is such an upbeat person, you see her bright smile and immediately want to be her friend.

The other info Karen shared with me could really save on entertainment costs.  She said the Springfield Greene County Library loads their "new items" list on Wednesdays.  You can find out what new books, DVDs, CDs, are available, and you can place a hold right from your computer.

Thanks Karen for Thursday's Thrifty Tips!

My Coke Rewards: Wednesday, August 17th

My Coke Rewards is an easy, simple way for Coke drinkers to save money.  Go to their website--register--then enter the codes that are found on their products.  For plastic products, you get 3 points (code is under lid).  For cases--it is inside the carton.  Depending on the size 12 cans or 24, you get 10 or 20 points.  They have some neat prizes, but the most penny conscious way to redeem them is for a Coke coupon.  35 points is all it takes for the company to send you a coupon for a FREE 20 oz.  There is no shipping or handling, no costs to you at all.  You enter codes worth 35 points, and they send you a paper coupon for a FREE Coke.

This is another great thing to have older kids do.  When I was in grade school, my mother let me keep the Green Stamps and use them to buy Christmas gifts with.  I loved to lick those stamps and  paste them in the books.  I remember getting her a green round footstool, and my father this shoeshine brush kit.  It was very thrilling to give them presents that I felt like I had earned.  Much more gratifying than if they had just given me money to buy them presents.

I know, that I've been promising to give you Karen's tips for thrift store shopping, but it's getting late--so I'm going to save that for tomorrow.

Well we've made it over the hump this week for savings,
Cindy

Save Your $1: Sunday, August 14th

I've blogged about my "movie night" with my friend Barb before.  A couple of weeks ago, I gave "Country Strong", with Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw a "thumbs" up.

I also said, that we had watched plenty that weren't worth the $1, we paid.  Unfortunately, tonight's movie was one of those.  "Going the Distance" with Justin Long and Drew Barrymore, wasn't worth walking across the parking lot to Kum & Go, to rent it---let alone, the distance.

Drew Barrymore is a very attractive woman, and Justin Long is a cute guy.  They even made a cute couple, but they had no chemistry on screen.

If you want chemistry, watch the music video of Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood singing their new duet, "Remind Me".  As they walk across the barren desert towards each other, you are afraid that they are both going to spontaneously go up in flames :)

Happy Sunday,
Cindy

Coupons! Coupons! Sunday, August 14th

Sorry for the late posting of the coupons--rough night last night:)---just kidding.  I've been having a terrible time sleeping, and I stayed up too late, and overslept.  If anyone has a cure for that, please let me know.  I wouldn't even care if I saved any money or not :)

Steer Clear: Saturday. August 13th

Tomorrow will begin another cycle of Walgreens Register Rewards.  Your best chance, actually your only chance, for taking advantage of these great deals, is to go to a location that is not a 24 hr. site.  I think that the location at Battlefield and Campbell, is the only 24 hr. store in Springfield, but I may possibly be mistaken on that.

Below is a preview of Register Rewards deals, starting tomorrow.
*Omega Smart Super Krill Oil $10 with a $10 RR.
*Reach Floss, Toothbrush, and Listerine:  Buy 2, Get a $3 RR.
*Revlon Nail Enamel, $3.99, Get a $3 RR (there was supposed to be a $1 coupon in the Smart Source insert of 7/17--but that was the Sunday, that a coupon insert didn't come in the NewsLeader, and it wasn't on my list of coupons for the Star)  Even at 99cts, this is a great deal.
*Pert Plus, $3.99 with a $3 RR (there is supposed to be a coupon in tomorrow's Sunday paper---but that was one reason, why I started this blog---often coupons that are listed nationally, are not in our paper.)  This also is a great deal, even at 99cts.

Wishing you a great week of savings!

Good As It Gets: Friday, August 12th

Today and tomorrow, JCPenneys is running a $10 off of a $25 purchase.  This gives you a 40% off whatever the regular, sale, or clearance price is.  The key to maximizing this deal is to pay for your purchases in as close to $25 dollar increments as you can.  When I have multiple purchases like this, I try to be considerate of the cashier (who may have been encouraged to discourage multiple transactions), and of the people behind me in the check out line (who I'm quite sure don't want to wait through my many transactions for a wardrobe of school clothes to buy their one pair of underwear :).
Saving money is great, but being courteous is greater.

Also my friend Karen, let me know about a BIG SALE at Red Racks Thrift Store.  Tomorrow they are going to have all shoes and clothing on sale for 98 CENTS.  Doors open at 9.  Red Racks is located in the old Hanks Furniture building, right behind Grizzly.  Karen said she scores terrific things there all the time.

Have a Fun Frugal Friday,
Cindy

School Lunch: Get Ready :) Thursday, August 11th

Very quickly, the time is approaching, when you will be packing lunch again.

Visit krazycouponlady.com, and scroll down to the middle of the page.  There is a link to smartsource.com, for a Starkist Tuna Pouch Product.  You have to follow the link.  If you go straight to the smartsource.com site, the coupon isn't available.  You can print the coupon off twice.  This makes the tuna less than 50cts.

It's a cheap tuna Thursday :)

It's a Thrifty Tuesday:) Tuesday. August 9

I went to a workshop today, and noticed one of my colleagues in this really cute blouse, in a color that looked wonderful on her.  I complimented her, and asked where she got it.  She said she bought it on her thrift store shopping day. Now, this person is very attractive, and would look adorable in a gunny sack, but it made me think about what cute things can be found in thrift stores for unbelievable prices.

A few years ago a friend of mine got married in Eureka Springs.  Her dress was gorgeous, you could have worn it on the red carpet.  When I asked where she got it, she said a local thrift shop.  It had had a small stain on it, but since she could sew, she just designed a small flower to cover it.

Another friend gets gorgeous jewelry at the $1 Jewelry Shop at the corner of National and Battlefield.

If you know of a great little out of the way place where good deals can be found, email me at booklady500@aol.com, and I will share.

Maybe since the heat has broken a bit, we can all save a little on our air conditioning:)

Teachable Moment :) Monday, August 9th

Lesson for today :)  You don't always have to have a coupon to get a great deal :)

My son is a junior in college.  He just moved into a loft with 3 other boys.  (I'm sure if they were to read this--they would prefer that I call them men, but they are living with my baby :)---so to me they're boys :)

He said that he needed to go to Wal-Mart to get some things they needed.  This is his first year, not living at home, or in the dorm---as I think it is for his roommates, so they are finding out just what it takes to set up house keeping :)

I told him, instead of going to Wal-Mart, meet me at Dollar Tree, and then I would take him to lunch.  We picked up dishes, towels, dishwasher detergent, trash can and a few kitchen utensils.  I had to smile when he said, "This dollar store is great."  And he is right.  Dollar Tree is 10 steps above any other dollar store that I have ever been too.  I always go there if I have to buy a card (2 for $1), or balloons--only $1.  They have really cute balloon designs too.  Perfect for a birthday, or a get-well bouquet.

I hope you have many savings this Monday.

Hope above helps you to choose which, if any paper to buy today.  Today's coupons were definitely better in the Star today, which might offset it's higher price.  At Walgreens the Star is $2, the NewsLeader is only $1.25.  The Newsleader does have all the ads (i.e. Walgreens, CVS, etc.)  but you can get those online anyway.
Hope you have a great couponing week!

Big Sam's Club News: Friday, August 5th

From now through August 7th, Sam's Club will be opening their doors to non-members.  Sam's is one of my favorite places to buy fruit.  The new one over by the Library Center is just awesome.

As of today, my blog has had 707 views.  Thanks everyone for looking, and for spreading the news about my site.  Be sure and email me at booklady500@aol.com, with any money saving tips.

Sorry about no post yesterday.  The "Savings Center" :), had internet problems.

Hope you have a Frugal Friday!

Here is a link to Plastic Jungle.  I have gotten Penneys gift cards there for 14% off.  With Christmas coming up, this is a good resource to get items cheaply.  It's like taking an additional 14% off the sale price.

Super Cereal Deals: Monday, August 1st

Today's Deal:  My good friend Tamra shared today's deal:)  Cereal is on sale at Dillons for $1.38 a box.  Use coupons from the paper, some boxes also have "peelie" coupons on them, and you are eating a very cheap breakfast.  Dillons will change their sale prices on Wed., so this is something you need to jump on.  Tamra also said that several varieties of cereal at Wal-Mart are only $3.
Thanks Tamra for sharing with all of us.  That's what it's all about, helping each other in this tough economy.

Here are just a few other great deals at Wal-Mart right now:
*Bic Disposable Razors 12ct.-use coupon from this Sunday's paper-78% off
*Oral B Floss Essentials, 55 yds (buy 2 and you can string it across a football field :)-coupon from this Sunday's paper-77% off
*Wishbone Salad Dressing-coupon from this Sun. paper-76% off
*Nivea Lip Care products-coupon from this Sun. paper-61% off
*Ivory Bar 3ct-coupon from 7/3-52% off
*Crest Kids' Toothpaste-coupon from this Sun. paper-50% off (have you ever tasted this stuff---believe me, only a kid could like it :)
*Tampax Tampons-coupon in this Sun. paper-50% off

Visit coupons.com, for some great printable coupons.  I always advise everyone to do this quick, each coupon is only allowed a certain number of prints, and the good ones go fast.

I apologize for not getting a recipe put on yesterday.  Sunday is movie night with my friend Barb, and by the time I got home, I couldn't make myself do another thing :)  We watched "Country Strong", with Gynneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw.  It's in Redbox right now, and definitely worth your $1---and believe me, we have been doing movie night for quite awhile now, and we've watched plenty that weren't worth a $1 :)

Today's Recipe:  Strawberry Kiwi Salad, using strawberries on sale at Price Cutter.
Peel and slice 3 kiwi and 1 avocado.  Slice strawberries.  Arrange sliced fruit on lettuce leaves, pour on a citrus dressing of your choice.

Hope you save a lot today,
Cindy
