Today's recipe:  South of the Border Hash browns using Mr. Deli's hash browns, which are buy 1/get 1, at Price Cutter this week.
1 pkg. hash browns, 1-4oz can of green chiles, 1c. shredded Monterey Jack cheese, 3T. margarine
Cover hash browns with boiling water--let stand 5 min.  Drain thoroughly.  Layer half of potatoes, chiles, and cheese into ungreased  small baking pan.  Dot with half the margarine.  Repeat layering.  Cover and bake 20 min. at 350 degrees.  Cover and bake 20 min.  Uncover and bake until golden brown.

Wednesday, June 29th

Today's Deal:  No time to shop today, so the following great deal was one I took advantage of on Sunday.  Walgreens has Dove Men's Bodywash on sale 4 for $15.  I had a coupon for Buy 1/Get1 Free, which was in this Sunday's paper, so that brought the price down to $7.50.  A register reward printed out for $5 because I purchased 4 Dove items, so my final price was $2.50 for 4.  Under 70 cents for each bottle. Great deal!
Register rewards and sale prices are good until Sat., but remember to call the store if the Register Reward item is all you are going for.  Whether they have the item or not will depend on when their truck delivered this week.

Today's Recipe: Strawberry Angel Cake using angel food cake on sale this week at Dillons.
1 box strawberry gelatin, 1-8oz. pkg frozen strawberries, 1 carton whipped topping, 1/2 of angel food cake torn into bite size chunks.
Mix gelatin as directed.  Add berries and mix.  Place in fridge until it begins to set.  Add whipped topping and cake chunks.  Mix lightly and pour into casserole dish.  Refrigerate until set.

Save and stay cool (and I'm talking about temp. here.  It's way too hot for me out there :)

Tuesday: June 28

Today's Deal:  CVS has Brilliant tampons on sale for $6.79, with a $6.79 Extra Bucks coupon after purchase.  I had $6.49 in Extra Bucks from purchases I had made last week.  So my out of pocket expense was only 30 cents, and I left the store with $6.79 in Extra Bucks to use for my next purchase.
(Don't you think "Brilliant" is an odd name for a brand of tampon.  Figure out a way for us to skip the whole thing, then we'll talk "Brilliant" :)

I was asked how many papers I buy each week, and that all depends on what the coupons are.  This week the News-Leader had great coupons for me, and the KC Star only average.  So I bought several News-Leaders, and only a couple of copies of the Star.  If I buy extra papers, I never throw them away.  This week I walked around the outside of my apartment complex, and when I saw anyone sitting on their patio---I gave them one.  The look of surprise on a stranger's face, when you offer them a paper is pretty comical.  I gave the rest away at work.
Just think if everyone couponed and purchased 4 papers instead of just one.  The News Leader would have to hire more staff, thus boosting our local economy.  The key is, make sure the coupons are good enough for you to justify the cost of the paper.  That is the main reason I decided to print what coupons are in which paper.  I hate to buy a paper, then find out it didn't have the coupon I wanted.

Today's recipe:  Butter-0 Heaven  using Edy's ice cream on sale at Dillon's.
Line 12x9 baking pan with crushed Oreos.  Cover with thick layer of ice cream.  Crush 2 Butterfingers and sprinkle over top of ice cream. Cover and freeze until ready to serve. Candy bars, cookies, and ice cream---is this not the perfect recipe :)

Until we save again :)

Monday: June 27

Today's Deal:  Today I'm going to teach you how to play a game I call "Register Reward Go Round" :)
A couple of weeks ago I received a $2 Register Reward for Blistex--the Blistex was $2.  I then used the Register Reward on a Reach Toothbrush that was on sale for $2.99.  Thus paying only 99 cents for the toothbrush.  A $2 Register Reward printed out for the toothbrush.  Then I used the toothbrush Register Reward on Pringles, that were on sale 4 for $5.  I had a $1 manufacturer coupon for the Pringles, and I used the Register Reward from the toothbrush, which brought my out of pocket expense to $2.  The Pringles also printed out a $2 Register Reward.
So for $4.99, out of pocket expense, I have purchased 1 lip balm, 1 toothbrush, and 4 cans of Pringles, and I have a $2 Register Reward to use on my next Walgreens purchase.  Not bad.
Now I can hear you thinking :)  How can Walgreens afford to give things away?  Well here's how.  That particular afternoon, I wasn't feeling well.  I had actually stopped to pick up a prescription.  I couldn't face stopping anywhere else, so I purchased a few things that I needed for dinner that night-sugar, milk, and 2 diet sodas.  It was worth it to me, to pay a little more for those things, so that I could rush home and throw up.  Just kidding :)  Normally I would have picked those items up where they were cheapest, but not that day.  Multiply millions of people who are just too tired, sick, or lazy:)  to go anywhere else for that one more thing, and it more than offsets their cost.

Today's Recipe:  Quick Ground Round Skillet Pasta, using ground round on sale at Harter House.
1 lb. ground round, 1 onion, 1 green pepper, 2 cups chopped tomatoes
Cook meat and onion-drain.  Add rest of ingredients, with salt and pepper to taste.  Cook on low heat for 15 min.

I'd like to thank Teresa for putting me on her Facebook page.  Please feel free to do the same if you are a Facebook user.  I would be very appreciative.

Live long and save,
Cindy

Yeah, I'm a closet trekkie :)

Sunday: June 26

Today's Deal:  Walgreen's had 6 pack Dove soap for men on sale 3 packages for $18.  I had a $4 coupon for each package, and a Register Reward for $6 printed after sale, so the soap was free.  I love free:)

Don't miss the Kentucky Fried Chicken coupon in Parade in Sunday's paper.  It is a B1G1 of their grilled chicken value meal.  2 pcs. grilled chicken, cole slaw, biscuit and drink for only $5---you can't beat 2 meals for $5.

Today's recipe:  Easy Schmeezy Cheesecake using Best Choice Whipped Topping, on sale at Price Cutter, 10 for $10.
1 graham cracker crust, 1 cream cheese, 1 whipped topping, 1 can cherry pie filling.
Mix cream cheese, whipped topping, 1/3 c. sugar, 1/4 tsp. vanilla.  Pour into graham cracker crust and chill.  Chill cherry pie filling, pour over pie when ready to serve.

May the savings be with you,
Cindy

I know a bad Star Wars pun :)

Saturday: June 25, 2011

30 people have looked at my blog, and it's only 4 days old.  That makes me very happy:)

Today's great deal was at CJ and Christopher Banks.  CJ has khaki skirts (wrinkle free) on sale for $9.99.  Be sure and call before you go out there, they only had a few.  Their plain jewel neck tees are 9.99 at Christopher.  I'm a CJ on bottom and a Christopher on top :)  The staff at both stores are very friendly.

Tomorrow CVS will begin their sale for the week.  CVS has started having their sales from Sun. - Fri.  Odd I know, and the clerk I spoke with said it is going over like a lead balloon.  Beginning tomorrow CVS will have "Rephresh Brilliant Tampons" for $5.79, with a $5.79 Extra Bucks rebate.  There is also a coupon at their website for $1 off, so this could be a money maker. (Brilliant coupon.com)  Remember CVS writes rainchecks.  You can use Extra Bucks to pay for an item, as long as it isn't the same item.  (Example: You couldn't use an Extra Bucks tampon rebate to pay for another box of tampons.)  By the way, that isn't a typo on "refresh", that's the way it's spelled on the product.

Today's recipe:  Using Kroger 51-60 pc. shrimp on sale for $5.99 at Dillons.
Take 3/4 cup of chipotle marinade and lime juice.  Put shrimp and marinade mixture in a resealable bag.  Put in frig. for 30 min.  Save marinade mixture for brushing when you put everything on the grill.
After taking out of of frig., put shrimp on skewer and sear to warm them.

On one skewer put vegetables and chunks of either fresh or canned pineapple. Brush fruit and vegetables with marinade also.  Grill until desired tenderness.

I do have to point out that Dillon's has there swim noodles on sale for $1.29.    Great deal!

Tomorrow I will list the coupons that are in the Sunday News Leader, and the Kansas City Star.  I will do my best to have posted by 9a.m.  Walgreens does sell New Leaders for $1.25 and KC Stars for $2.00.  You can use Register Rewards to pay for these.

Many people say they don't have time to use coupons, they are busy.  Believe me, I know about busy.  I pluck my eyebrows in the rear view mirror :)  Even if you only use $1.00 a week, that's $52 dollars a year.  That could mean a nice dinner out, another time at the movies, etc.  I'm not an "extreme couponer", if I can do it, then anyone can.

Friday: June 24

My saving tip today has to do with something that I did a few weeks ago.  I was in a store that had a pad of manufacturer coupons that advertised, "Buy 2 Candy Bars, and Get a Dr. Pepper Free".  Candy bars weren't on sale at the time, but the coupon had an expiration date in October, so I knew I could hold on to the coupon until I found candy on sale.  Candy did go on sale at Walgreen's for 39 cents.  I got 2 bars and a Dr. Pepper for 80 cents.  Look for coupons everywhere, if you see one that you are sure you will use, take a couple, even if you don't plan to use it that day.  A manufacturer coupon can usually be used anywhere that product is sold.

Today's recipe:  using bratwurst which are on sale at Harter House for $2.49 lb.
Ingredients:  Brats, flour tortillas, German mustard, sliced muenster cheese, dill pickles slices, yellow onion
Slice cooked brats into 1/4 in. slices
Spread  top and bottom tortilla with mustard.
On bottom tortilla layer cheese, brat slices, pickle, onion then another layer of cheese, cover with top tortilla.  Press down on top tortilla, then grill over medium heat until cheese is melted.  Slice into wedges and serve.

Thursday: June 23rd

Today's great deal comes from CVS.  They had Colgate toothpaste for $2.79, that printed off a $2 Extra Bucks coupon, so basically you were getting it for 79 cents.  I had a CVS coupon which gave me another $1 off, and a manufacturer coupon for another $1 off.  So they paid me $1.21 to buy toothpaste.  You can't beat that.

To receive the Extra Bucks, you must sign up for their customer loyalty card, but as you can see from the illustration above, it's well worth it.
Two other great buys I made there:  Powerade 5 for $5-with a $2 Extra Bucks rebate, which made those 60 cents a bottle.  Various varieties of Mars candy and Wrigley's gum had a promotion of "Buy $10 and get $3 Extra Bucks" rebate.  I purchased 10 packages of fun bars and gum for around 75 cents a package.

I also had $9 in Extra Bucks from a previous shopping trip, so with coupons and Extra Bucks, I was only out $7 out of pocket for the toothpaste, 5 Powerades and 10 packages of candy.  And I left the stores with $7 in Extra Bucks to use on my next purchase.  7 dollars spent,  minus $7 dollars gained, means today I received all of those items for free.

The key is to use Extra Bucks on items that give back Extra Bucks for the least out of pocket expense.

The great thing about CVS is they will write rain checks for Extra Bucks items that they are out of.  Today I had them write a rain check for Hershey's Bliss chocolates and Gum lozenges.  Both of those items will be free when they are back in stock.

The other great deal that I used today was a restaurant certificate for $20,  that I only paid $10 for.  The certificate was to "Old Chicago Pizza".  I printed this coupon off one of the social networking sites.  If you would like to join that site, email me at booklady500@aol.com, and I will send you the link.  My friend Ann and I went to lunch, and I definitely made a believer out of her.  I am emailing her the link today.  We had a delicious lunch, Oriental Chicken Salad and Pizza, with the most wonderful strawberry cheesecake that I have ever put in my mouth.  We had a good time for a good price.  Who could ask for more :)

Today's recipe:  using "Best Choice" shell macaroni on sale at Price Cutter 10 for $10.
Bacon Macaroni and Cheese:  3 cups macaroni, 4 slices bacon, 2 T. flour, 2 cups milk, 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 1/4 c. parmesan cheese
Heat oven to 350.
Cook macaroni and bacon, save bacon drippings.
Add flour to drippings, stir in milk, bring to a boil, stir 3-5 min. until thickened.
Stir in one cup cheddar and the parmesan cheese, cook until melted.  Add bacon and macaroni.
Spoon into 1 and 1/2 qt. casserole dish.  Top with remaining cheddar.  Bake 20 min.

One of my favorite places to score fantastic deals is Walgreens.  Their "register rewards" program is wonderful.
This week you can purchase "Applied Nutrition Easy Absorb Calcium" for $10.  $10 in "register rewards" will then print after you have made the purchase.  This is basically a $10 coupon that you can use on almost anything, when you make your next purchase.  It's like getting the calcium supplement for free.  If you are afraid that you will forget to use the "register reward", you can make a second purchase right then.
Example:  I bought the calcium pills, my $10 "register reward" then printed.  Next, I paid for 3-Charmin toilet paper 6 roll packages that were on sale for $2.99 each.  I added 3 candy bars that were on special for 49 cents, and use my register reward, that had just printed, on my second transaction.  For this second transaction, I paid under $1.
A bonus is that inside the calcium supplement is a coupon book for several varieties of "Applied Nutrition" supplements.
This deal is good through Saturday.
***The Walgreen's at National and St. Louis was out of the calcium supplement today, but they will get a truck in tomorrow.  The trip was not a waste of time though, I scored some neat toys and stickers on their clearance racks for 25 cents each.  I always check the clearance racks at Walgreen's.  I have found some really great buys.

Penney's is currently offering 15% off all regular, sale and clearance prices, if you use your Penney's card.  I saw on 80% off rack in the department for women.  An extra 15% of an item that is already marked 80% off could give you a pretty sweet deal.

Today's Recipe: using split chicken breast on sale this week, at Dillons, for 99 cents a lb.
Rub honey mustard over skinless chicken breasts then roll in Italian bread crumbs.  Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Easy!

Save Like me :)

I have a talent.  I wish it was music or art, but it is a talent just the same.

I have a knack for finding good deals.  People are always amazed at the items that I get free or very, very cheap.  My daughter is constantly wanting to raid my "free" closet. :)

I am going to share my finds with you, along with recipes that use the sale ingredients found in our local grocery store ads.

I'll also let you know which stores I visit that have run out of their advertised items.  This hopefully will save you time and gas, as well as disappointment.

I'll also list what coupons are in the Sunday edition of the Springfield News Leader, and the Kansas City Star.  If you're like me, that's a big reason that I buy the paper.  I'm always bummed if there aren't any coupons that I will use.  On Sundays, check my list and then you can decide whether to purchase or not.

Check back each day to see what new deal I've found.

Looking forward to saving you money.
Cindy
